Lord Lieutenant

The Lord-Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty is Mrs Janet Bowen who was appointed in April 2007 by HM The Queen on the death of Sir Roderick Stirling KCVO.  Mrs Bowen is a resident of Strathpeffer.

As Lord-Lieutenant, her first and foremost duty is to uphold the dignity of the Crown.

Lord-Lieutenants are appointed by The Queen, and are responsible for the organisation of all official Royal visits to their area, not just by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh but by any member of the Royal Family. On the day of the visit they escort the Royal visitor.

They are also responsible for making nominations for honours and Queen's Awards and for recommending those for invitation to Her Majesty's Garden Party held each year at The Palace of Holyroodhouse. They participate in civic, voluntary and social activities within the Lieutenancy and liaise with local units of the Armed Services and their associated cadet forces.

Lord-Lieutenants also carry out other duties, such as the presentation of decorations (where the recipient is unable to attend an Investiture), The Queen's Awards for Export and Technology, The Queens Award for Voluntary Service, The Queen's Award for Enterprise,The Queen's Scout and Queen's Guide awards.

Among the many important roles the Lord-Lieutenant carries out in the community is presenting a message of congratulations from HM The Queen to those celebrating their 100th Birthday or 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary.
